Wandering the corridors of misery. Watching a loved one wither and die. Eyes once filled with comfort. Now gaze past me empty. I know about death. What do you know? I don’t want to move on. I don’t want to be happy. A son without a mother, a motherless son. Caught myself outside that room. Turned the knob to open the door. It sits quiet and still. An emptiness that can’t be filled.
Take me instead. Let me go in her place, I begged. I held her ashes in my palm. I buried them at that tree. At the foot of the mountain. On that trail covered in snow. Down that dirt road. You don’t know loss. You don’t know.

Trapped Animal

My body lays still. Eyes closed. Shut tight. Light pierces this dark room. Never leave. What you can’t see. Nothing but ceremonies now. Nothing but remembrances of how. Nothing but hymns to hear. Nothing but ignorance and fear. These wounds flex and tear, spilling forth rays so bright. But that light is dim. And it burns out quick. Finally, dark. Cold and stark.
My mind obsesses about the end. I am a wound that refuses to mend. These thoughts weigh upon me. I am an insect plucked of wings. We all die alone. I’ll stay in this place. A locked door. A life displaced. Free from grace.

Starless skies. Oblivion redefined. Infinitely vast. Choking on a speck. The dust of space coats the lungs of god; the universe rots. A cosmic pestilence, the eating of worlds.
Spit from the maw of god. Civilization of dust. Progress gone to rust. Nothing left but regret. Of all that could have been. A beginning forsaken. Life at the end.

Bones Under Feet

A vision betrayed my mortal eyes. Of smokestacks spewing forth bone and ash. A noxious air that coats the throat. On my tongue, the stain of humanity’s last. Land of human waste. Of human mistakes.
I peered into a pit full of bones bleached white by the blazing sun. I stumbled down and felt them under feet. Such is death, hollow and incomplete. I cried for them; these wounds torn anew. I bled for them; a soul torn in two. But if thoughts are all we have to remember the dead. I’ll bear them like a burden. Like stains of blood upon bone.

There is no faith without God. There is no God without man. A trembling echo of profound ignorance. An unyielding pressure. A faithless posture. A tightening wire. Around the throat of us all. Is this the price of tradition? Is this the death of ambition? You would give up everything.
The glory of His blood. Cast upon a waiting vessel. The cries of praise ring out. Tones of elation and relief. A wondrous sight, this miasma made flesh. Infected and tempted. Your body, broken and distended. Your worthless souls. Raked over coals. I will no longer hear these ignorant pleas, these sordid dreams. There is no forgiveness. There is no penitence. One day you will know. What God took from us all.
